 FYI
Recent Earthquakes

Since Tuesday, there have been hundreds of earthquakes around the globe. Most of the earthquakes were too small for anyone to feel.  The quakes on the East Coast and Colorado are prime examples of how earthquakes can occur any time and at any location.  The risk of a major earthquake is high in Southern California.  According to the Southern California Earthquake Center, California has a 99.7% chance of having a magnitude 6.7 or larger earthquake during the next 30 years. The likelihood of an even more powerful quake of magnitude 7.5 or greater in the next 30 years is 46%. If you watched the media coverage of the East Coast quake, you probably saw people running out of the buildings.  Running outside is not recommended and there is a greater risk of injury from falling glass and debris.  The recommended response to earthquakes in California is to Drop, Cover, and Hold-On under a sturdy table.  You can also stand against and face an interior wall while covering your head and neck.  Falling debris and furnishings moving around the room are the biggest hazards.  If you are outside, try to get as far away from the buildings as you can and stay away from trees and power lines.

Prepare Now!

Preparing ahead of time is critical. You cannot control how the earthquake will shake you.  But you can act now, and control how it will harm you.
·         Take the time now to secure furniture and heavy objects in your home and office.
·         Put together a family disaster survival kit for your home and vehicle.
·         Establish an out of state phone contact for your family to call following an earthquake.
·         If you have children in K-12 school, become familiar with the school emergency plan and find out what provisions the school has if you cannot get to your child right away.
·         Learn basic first aid and make sure you have first aid supplies in your kits.
